Batik is an ancient method of dyeing fabric, popular today in South Asia. At the beginning, the design is drawn with a pencil on a piece of cotton cloth. During the dyeing process, some areas of the material are covered with wax to create designs by preventing dyes from penetrating in patterned areas. Multicolored and blended effects are obtained by repeating the dyeing process several times from the lightest color to the darkest color. After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry and boiled to dissolve the wax. Then it reveals the deep rich colors and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character.
The Lotus symbolizes purity, beauty, majesty, grace, fertility, wealth, richness, knowledge and serenity. The Lotus is a sacred flower for Buddhists. The Lotus is one of the eight auspicious signs of Buddhism - an eight petalled lotus used in Buddhist mandalas symbolizes cosmic harmony, a thousand petalled Lotus, spiritual illumination. A bud symbolizes potential. The well known Buddhist mantra, "Om mane padme," refers to the jewel in the lotus, enlightenment.
