A beautiful turtle from Honduras
Turtles are very common in the Atlantic and Pacific shorelines of Honduras. This item is great for those who have a special affinity with turtles! A candle can slip right in through the opening of the turtle's shell. The Cialmagul Cooperative in La Arada, Honduras does not use any paint to draw their art. After they mold and bake the item, the artisans polish with a white stone until the clay changes color. They then draw the art with a bag of soft mud, just like a baker draws with icing on a cake. The soft mud dries up and the item is placed in a kiln where green leaves are burned. The leaves burn dark smoke and the entire piece turns black. After the item cools down the artisans simply scrape off the mud art to reveal the white base layer. It is a process that takes 3 weeks to complete.
